The Challenge

  • ALNAP sets out to evaluate the work of humanitarian organisations, empowering them to learn from their interventions and to operate more efficiently.
  • From earthquakes to epidemics and areas hit by civil war, ALNAP’s work takes it to some of the most dangerous places on Earth. They asked us to create a guide for its humanitarian evaluators - a physical document that would be as practical out in the field as it would in an office environment.
  • Evaluation has historically been an underloved area in design, so this was a field in which great creative strides stood to be made.
  • ALNAP had already created a digital pilot guide. Our job was to take this content and to transform it, re-designing the look and feel to make it as accessible as possible.
  • We also had to meet the production challenge of creating a durable guide that could be used anywhere on the planet.

The Solution

  • In keeping with ALNAP’s brand guidelines, we crafted a new visual design for the guide, which was split into 18 distinct sections.
  • Our new design aimed to be authoritative yet approachable, with a focus on clarity. All diagrams were given a unified treatment that emphasised simplicity, while an ultra-legible typeface was chosen to maximise ‘at-a-glance’ cognition.
  • We conducted extensive research into navigation features to maximise the practical usability of the printed guide. Colour coding, iconography and clearly-marked cross referencing enabled users to easily navigate around the 366-page guide.
  • We also investigated a wide array of potential production options and tested dummies – balancing practicality, durability, usability and budget.
  • Once a final format had been agreed upon with the client, Human After All provided creative direction on every aspect of the guide - from the icon design to front cover and information design. We also determined the final layout of all the sections to ensure there was a logical and engaging visual system throughout the guide.

The Results

  • We delivered the final printed guide on October 10th 2016. The finished product included a PVC-wrapped outer cover, helping it to survive the knocks, scrapes and stains of use in challenging environments.
  • In tandem with the full printed guide, we also created a new, digitally-optimised iteration to be hosted on ALNAP’s website. Now ALNAP evaluators can access the guide in any location with an internet location - even if their physical version isn’t within reach.
  • Wide use of linked URLs and cross-referencing ensured a user-friendly experience for the guide’s digital version.
  • A lean creative approach also ensured this large project was completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • The guide won in the Publishing category of the CreativePool Annual 2017.
