The Challenge

  • Independent publisher inkjockey came to Human After All to create an entirely new brand and an innovative new product: a bespoke children’s storybook series that could reconnect young people with the the magic of storytelling.
  • Before creating the product, we needed to create a brand that would appeal to parents and families wishing to gift a personalised book and reinvent how children engage with stories. The brand needed to be trustworthy and inspire imagination.
  • We would also help create a “template” story, written by author Mark Heywood and illustrated by us, which could be customised to the person reading it. Going beyond the child’s name, this would be a truly bespoke story.
  • Finally, inkjockey needed a website to communicate their mission and sell their product.

The Solution

  • We held a brand workshop with the author to discover the stories and beliefs behind the brand and how these could be best communicated to the target audience.
  • Based on this workshop, we conceived mystory. Along with a logo and mission statement (to make “beautiful bespoke books that make little people light up”), the resulting brand guideline clearly defined messaging, and visual language (such as logo, colour palette, typography and iconography for the mystory brand).
  • Once author Mark Heywood had written an initial draft of the story, we worked closely with him to develop the narrative of the story which was brought to life with an illustrative style which would appeal and engage young people.
  • Within the story, we buried delightful details for readers to discover, including the bespoke elements worked into the artwork which can be swiftly updated on each order.
  • With a strong brand identity and the distinctive illustrative style of the first product, inkjockey is planning on creating a collection of books to follow young people throughout childhood.
  • To promote the product and launch the brand, we designed and built a lean e-commerce website where the readers can tailor their book and order their first mystory book.

The Results

  • mystory’s debut bespoke storybook, The Secret Garden Party, was launched in London in November 2015.
